What to wear in London for a Summertime Visit?

I am relocating to London in September and will be taking a house-hunting trip in early July. As a guy, I was curious about the type of clothing to pack for roaming around the city during the daytime. Of course, in the states, we tend to wear shorts, t-shirts, golf-shirts, etc. but I was hoping for some advice as to what is "typical" for London (i.e., do people wear shorts out, etc.?). How about for women? What is typical/practical for July? Thanks!!
